Ethane (C2H6)
Ethane (C2H6)
Ethane is a colorless, odorless, and flammable gas under standard conditions. It is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethyl alcohol and acetone, and soluble in benzene. Ethane forms explosive mixtures with air and can burn or explode when exposed to heat sources or open flames. Combustion (decomposition) products include carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It reacts vigorously with fluorine and chlorine. In the chemical industry, ethane is primarily used to produce ethylene, vinyl chloride, chloroethane, acetaldehyde, ethyl alcohol, ethylene oxide, and ethylene glycol through steam cracking. Ethane is also used as a refrigerant in refrigeration facilities and as a standard gas and calibration gas for heat treatment in the metallurgical industry.
