- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the most common and simplest sulfur oxide, with the chemical formula SO2. It is a colorless gas with an irritating and pungent odor. SO2 is soluble in water, ethyl alcohol, and ether. When dissolved in water, it forms sulfurous acid (H2SO3), which can be further oxidized to produce sulfuric acid efficiently.
